Last year I went on a trip overseas with my school to Greece/Italy/Vatican City(briefly)/Singapore(briefly). It was out of this world - almost literally for me, living in the middle of nowhere on a country that is about the size of a 50 cent coin. However incredible it was.. I would never recommend it for anyone else (travelling with a school, that is). The countries were phenomenal and the flying was great... But you are surrounded with about 30 other people that speak English, which meant that I never really got to absorb any sort of real culture, and had to get up at 7am every morning to visit as many museums it takes to make them all blur into one. Which is sad. There were some moments though when I got to take a step out of a Classics lecture and slip into the sublime of another country. Like Venice, for one. How fucking incredible is Venice? Some of the other students and I walked for as long as we could to get ourselves as lost as possible, then when they went and bought a bottle of Absinth I begun to find my way back to the hotel with another non-participant in the drinking. It was phenomenal. The moon on the water ways, the cobblestone footpaths. There was a walkway that came to a deadend at one of the waterways, and there were two teenaged girls with a bottle of some sort of alcoholic substance just sitting there drinking. That was my favourite moment whilst I was over seas.

Santorini was another favourite of mine. The white houses, the blue rooves, the donkeys! Unfortunately only now do I know of the animal cruelty that went on there. This is my favourite photo from the trip - there was a stray dog (I almost died of excitement with all the stray dogs over there, I patted them all. Did not contract raibies - fear not) lying on one of the rooves, so another student and I went and sat with him, admiring the view.

Another favourite was Tivoli. What a sweet little village that was. We drove to the top of it and went to an Abbey there. They had built hundreds and hundreds of water fountains. It was magnificent. The second photo - oh sweet jesus! There was a woman absorbing the sun, with her eyes closed. I liked her style. So I documented it.

And an assortment of others photos from other destinations such as Delphi, Orviato, the Mediterranean (about the only time I've ever worn a bikini) and a pet shop in Athens (animals were in horrible condition. On a lighter note, saw my first ever Chipmunks!)

There are about a quadrillion other photos that I've chosen not to put up here, for lack of time and will.
Where have you been that is worth making mention of?
Awesome photos, looks like you had an amazing trip!
ReplyDeleteAnd bless those horses are so cute!
Well I am off to France in October so hopefully when I come back it will have been a place worth mentioning ;)
xx
I'm jealous. I'd love to go anywhere but the Netherlands. The thing is, I'm way too poor. But I just might go on a little trip in November, I think my boyfriend is up to something...
ReplyDeleteIt looks like you had such an amazing time. I've been to Prague in Czech Republic with my school a few years ago. It was awesome, it's a great city. Still, I think when you're going with school a lot of people are focussing on getting drunk in stead of seeing the great country that they're in. So I went back the year after the trip with two friends (we still got drunk though).
I've been to Spain this summerbreak, it was quite cool. We saw Barcelona and Valencia. I saw Fernando's grandparents and they stuffed me with paëlla. I never been so full in my life.
Now I'm going to get really rich and famous so I can go all around the world. I'll say hi to you when I'm in New Zealand.
Oh, looks like a good 'ol time! And you look adorable while on your travels :)
ReplyDeleteyou're so lucky to be traveling so much!
ReplyDeleteI haven't been outside of the United States for years, and even then, I've only been to Mexico. You should visit the US though!
weeee i like reading blogs from new zealand. i miss it so. i used to live in new plymouth. now i live in london. how is aotearoa? your trip to europs looks amazing! but you are right about not being able to absorb the different cultures thats why i have promised myself never to go on a contiki tour
ReplyDeleteI've never been to Greece, Italy or Singapore but I definitely want to go!! I went on a school trip to Spain a couple years ago and I plan on going to England pretty soon.
ReplyDeleteTraveling is so much fun, learning about different cultures and sight seeing, I love it. Especially all the fun treasures you bring home after, that's the best part :)
2 weeks in Scotland when I was 15, we travelled with a bagpipe band who was compeating in the Highland Games, boy could they party! And I did lots of shopping too!
ReplyDeleteOh so awesome!! What a cool trip!I've never really traveled outside of the island (only when I moved from the US to here) but Puerto Rico has some pretty spots, really tropical.
ReplyDeleteI feel sorry for those animals in the pet shop that were in bad conditions. (I'm an animal lover!)
Sincerely Louie, Ciao!
I'm so happy you visited Italy:)
ReplyDeleteMy boyfriend is Italian so I already feel like half Italian :-p and you are right, Venice is something spectacular :)
I can understand what you say about couldn't feel the "real" atmosphere because you were only with that speak English. But I hope you will remember all that forever anyways, and maybe one day you can go back and I can do a guide tour to you in Rome for example! ;)
Love the pics!
xx from Madrid.
great blog, dear :)
ReplyDeleteHmm, you should go to the heartlands where the "real" people are with their unwashed non-westernised minds. You'll be surprised.
